Feeling OK about how the house looks… then I check the blogs

January 16, 2009

Even before we bought our house, I frequented a large number of “design” blogs that feed my brain with loads of creative ideas, cool color palettes and fun eye candy. They are wonderfully inspirational for this time in my life when we are making lots of big changes to our living space.

But I have a big problem with many of the “sneak peeks” into the lives (and living rooms) of people’s homes… they don’t have daily life scattered throughout. The homes are flawless! Granted, I’m sure they picked up the toys, magazines and mail before they snapped photos, but seriously, where is the letter opener that you use daily? Where do you put your phone chargers? Where is your grocery list? I’m not saying that all of that is on my counter tops, but seriously, where is life in your house?

Look at any of Design*Sponge’s sneak peeks, and you’ll be drooling. But, after you take a closer look, how realistic are these? (Just as a clarification, I *LOVE* Design*Sponge. It is definitely one of my top five favorite blogs.)

So, after picking out two places in my house where I am particularly proud of how I assembled the furniture and house goods, I look at them later and think, “That looks terrible!” (FYI: This is not a passive/aggressive plea for compliments… it is just a post on my lack of professionalism with house design documentation.)

So, mental note on things to assert in ’09:

  • Learn how to take professional-looking pictures of my house (including centering and lighting).
  • Feel confident in my decorating abilities, regardless of the millions of “sneak-peek” comparisons.
  • Remember that I am living in my house, not putting it on the market or having it photographed for a magazine.
  • My house is a reflection of who I am, and I am not perfect, so why should my house be?

Anyone else feel like their otherwise beautiful home looks amateur in pictures?

If she does, Christi, she’s been hiding it from me.

If I’m ever stabbed to death and the murder is shrouded in mystery, please alert the cops to the fact that Kate may have a hidden letter opener.
