Lunch Time Routine

March 10, 2010

Jigsaw Tears by Nashville’s Nicolas Abdallah

Today was my second day back at work after my week-long hiatus caring for family, and I finally got back into my normal work-time lunch routine. Anyone have something they do every day at lunch?

Barring a fun outing with JD or friends and Thursday noon yoga, most every lunch hour is spent in my office with the door shut. I’m very blessed to have a door to my own office with a ridiculously awesome view of the Vanderbilt campus. I usually have a peanut butter sandwich while reading the Wall Street Journal and listening to my Pandora radio station. I’ll check my Google Reader, update this here Schmate, and email friends. It is so nice to get away from the office, even though I’m still accessible (I generally leave my office door open during the day). Sometimes, by 5:00, I realize I’ve been in my little hole for nine straight hours, but I don’t mind at all. Perhaps it’s because I’m an only child, but sometimes I love just having a minute to collect my thoughts and get caught up.

When I first started my job here at Vanderbilt, I maintained helping a friend at her tutoring office at most lunch hours. It was so fun doing her billing and accounting that I didn’t realize how much I loved time to myself… until I quit. I have no idea how I got things done before that. Maybe I just didn’t. Now, I wouldn’t trade a little extra money for the sanity of a midday break.

So, if you ever need to reach me, you know where I’ll be from 11:45-12:45… in my little 7×14-foot space, 10 floors above the prettiest part of Vanderbilt.

You are the prettiest part of Vanderbilt. Granny always told Annette “pretty is as pretty does”.
