Friday Feast: Just Because Dinner

August 6, 2010

This is a fairly unconventional Friday Feast, but it was truly a feast … I had to share! Every so often, a bunch of couples gather for dinner “just because.” It started after our friends Libby and Will had their house flooded because we wanted to share a big meal after tearing out carpet and putting things out at the curb. Then we just started having them more often, but randomly, and calling them “Just Because” nights.

The group consists of all married couples, most with children under the age of two. So, it’s a very laid back evening. I wanted us to host the next one, but hosting 10 or more people can get expensive. So, in very un-Kate-like-fashion, I sent out an email that said:

So, in regards to dinner, can we make this a potluck? I’m just going to say: bring anything and let’s see what we come up with. Maybe we’ll have 4 salads and a dessert. Or fried chicken, fruit salad, and 3 appetizers. I don’t know! We’ll definitely supply drinks and a mystery food of our own, but this could be potentially awesome … and definitely fun.

And it was! We ended up with three pasta dishes (ha!) all with varying tastes, fresh corn on the cob, a pizza (my favorite), tacos, and cheese straws. It was so fun watching as couples would walk in, baby (or two) in tow, with a mystery dish: “What did you bring?” “Fun!”

I would recommend reserving one person to bring a mysterious dessert… but maybe that was the fun of it! It was so yummy, and we split up the leftovers for each other too.
