ATAD: Week 1

July 12, 2011

Excitedly (maybe only to me), I started ATAD (A Thing A Day) Challenge on July 1, where every day of this month, I get rid of at least one item for recycling, garbage or resale. This is part of my Thirty before 30 challenge, and I hope to get rid of more than 31 objects in July.

I chose July because it has 5 weekends… I can more easily spend time collecting items that need to go, especially when I slack off during the week. This first entry covers two weekends since I took my small blog break during that time.

Here are some of the highlights from July 1-July 10:

  • Old prom and bridesmaids dresses (I just don’t think I’ll use a seafoam, sequined dress with a fluffy skirt ever again. One particular dress went to three (!) proms, so I think that’s more than enough wear for the early 2000’s.)
  • A single sock from the best-of collection. (Admit it, you’ve got pretty awesome socks that are terrifically ugly, but they are so darn comfy that you can’t get rid of them. The sock below was one of my favorite ugly socks, but I lost its mate. Only this week did I finally have the heart to get rid of the sad single sock.)

  • While in the sock category, toe socks. (I just can’t do single-toe socks, folks. Just. can’t. do. it.)
  • Wine glass markers. (I mean, who can’t keep up with their glass of wine? Maybe you shouldn’t be having wine if you can’t keep it straight…)
  • Those Umbro-ripoff-brand shorts that you wore every day in high school. (Despite the nostalgia of bright purple booty shorts, I’m just never going to wear them again.)
  • My favorite pair of very washed-out jeans with torn edges and knees. (Let’s get real here: my future children are NOT going to want these if I were to save them. They are ugly and may never have been in fashion to begin with.)
  • Generic vases that you got free with a bouquet (below). (I’ve held onto this vase for over a year, thinking that certainly I could use it. Alas, no. I’ve just got to get rid of it.)

  • Books I’m just not going to read. (Whether gifted or random purchases, surely someone else will love this book better than me.)

Week 1 (plus an extra weekend) is done! I hope I find more items… I’m such a scrounge, seeing “potential” in everything. Hopefully I can let go of even more of my personal clutter.

Do you know The name says it all – you swap books! I’ve gotten a lot of good use out of it. Although if you’re trying to get rid of stuff instead of trade/upgrade, this kinda defeats the purpose…

Oooh, I second that!! I love paperbackswap. I’m also now considering whether I really need to hang on to my ripped up jeans….

Too bad about the booty shorts.

I can donate the prom dresses to the GRACE organization who recycles party dresses to underprivileged girls. But…such a sad thought about the lonely sock. Poor thing.
