Enter… the nursery

September 19, 2011

Even before JD and I felt comfortable telling people that we were pregnant, my mom and I had decided that we were re-doing a room in our house over Labor Day. (This is also a Thirty Before 30 list item too!) Mom and I like to tackle different painting projects together, much like the bathroom re-do we accomplished over Halloween 2008. For a few years, the big room in renovation consideration has been our junk room/future nursery, which had the similar bright red of the bathroom we repainted. You can see different pictures of it in our house tour and the big friend-visit weekend (it successfully slept three guys on three air mattresses).  The room was actually fine with the colors and the chair rail it had in there, but the previous owners used it as a nursery, which I just couldn’t imagine was a playful and calming room for their little boy.

We don’t even know the sex of our baby yet, but I knew the color scheme we wanted to stick with… a calming group of blue-greens and soft greens. What I didn’t expect was how awesome the room would turn out thanks to my mom’s amazing free-hand painting skills. (That woman is a professional.) Sherwin Williams was having a great Labor Day Sale (plus I think Mitch the paint guy liked us), so we got all of our supplies right after my mom arrived at Nashville International Airport, then got right to work.

I’ll let the pictures speak for themselves… click below to see a full spread of pictures.

Mom did a wonderful job painting the clouds, and as soon as all the furniture is in place, on a different trip she will paint grass along the bottom. The top half above the chair rail is more blue, with the bottom half, blue-green. I love it. It’s so calming and it feels like a nursery. I’m so thrilled with it all. We worked hard!

I’ll spend more time this week describing how we did each step, specifics on the paint, etc. But, for now, I just wanted to show you how good it looks, and to tell you how thankful I am that my mom came up just to work on this project. We painted a lot and I did not have the energy I wanted/needed all weekend, but Mom picked up the slack. It was a very fun and I could not have even imagined a room like this without her. She is just very talented doing all that she did for the room, and I’m so thankful to have her as my mom.

Yes, JD, my first thought as I read this was “How sweet.” Then I saw the Mitch comment. Sure, Mitch would have really liked “us” if he had noticed that you and I had accompanied Kate to the Sherwinn Williams store. He was a bit infatuated with the pregnant beauty, wasn’t he? On a side note: thanks, Kate, for the kind words. You’re a sweetheart you are. :)

UH-Dorable! I love a good nursery, especially one that’s not to “baby-ish” (and yes, I realize that usually is a contradiction, but that makes it all the more special!). I also love the slightly noticable baby bump :)
