Birmingham Babymoon

December 13, 2011

Several friends recommended JD and I take a “Babymoon,” a weekend trip somewhere just the two of us before Maggie arrives. I’m kind of a cheap-o and didn’t want to “waste money” on a random trip for just me and JD, but wowie, I’m so glad we went. It was an amazing, fun, very relaxing jaunt that was not only a fun experience for us to share but also helpful in creating closure in ending this season of our life.

So Birmingham is no Chicago, but it was still a lot of fun. We slept well, ate very well, and had an adventure driving around a new-to-us city. JD picked the hotel and the restaurants, and I planned the activities. I used the Design*Sponge Birmingham City Guide, and I’m so glad I did. We ended up visiting both Urban Suburban (don’t judge a book by its cover, by the way) and At Home, both recommended there.

Here are a few pictures from the weekend. (Can you tell I’m digging Instagram on my new iPhone?)

I looooove this idea for hanging old pictures. We spotted this at Urban Suburban and I just had to share it with you.

The Anthropology at the Summit had a fun winter display using mason jars. So clever.

We went to Flip Burger (not to miss) and split an eggnog liquid nitrogen milkshake. Pretty awesome.

And, here’s just a picture to make you jealous… we went to Bottega Saturday night, and after being treated very well by the staff (while we waited for a table at the bar, the manager brought us over a complimentary order of house-made chips and said “Babies have to eat!”), we split a bread pudding dessert. Quite delicious.

Overall, it was an amazing trip, and I highly recommend Birmingham if you want a food-filled, relaxing weekend.

Birmingham is quite the little sleeper tourist city – meaning you would never think a weekend there would be so fun, but they have great restaurants, arts and outdoor areas to explore. Love the “babymoon” idea!
